What the catalogue is trying to do
The Catalogue Raisonné Scholars Association describes these projects as research into an artist’s authentic works, their chronology and histories. That is more ambitious than an exhibition catalogue or a dealer inventory. Entries may bring together images, dimensions, materials, provenance, exhibitions and literature, ideally after careful examination and archival work.
Yet there is no single universal format. A project may cover paintings but not prints, only a defined period, or a particular medium. Some catalogues are printed volumes; others are living digital resources. The Art Institute of Chicago’s discussion of catalogues raisonnés explains why expert research and access to original objects matter, and why later scholarship can revise an earlier catalogue. The edition and date you consult should therefore be recorded, not assumed to be timeless.
Match the entry to the work offered
An entry number is a useful reference, not a substitute for comparison. Does the publication illustrate the same composition and the same physical work? Do dimensions, medium, inscriptions, ownership trail and any edition or cast designation match? A catalogue that records a design or edition can establish context without identifying the particular example for sale. Ask the seller which entry is claimed, which edition of the catalogue is cited and what evidence connects this object to that entry.
The Association’s project profiles show why updates matter. Researchers continue to add records, revisit old attributions, distinguish individual works within editions and expand prior printed catalogues. A missing entry may reflect scope, timing or unavailable evidence. Conversely, an entry's inclusion records a scholarly judgment reached under the project's methods; it does not guarantee the current condition or ownership of the offered object.
