One Miami museum exhibition deserves attention before the December itineraries take over. “Manoucher Yektai: The Stranger and the Tree” closes Nov. 22, 2026, at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami. Visitors arriving for Art Basel Miami Beach will have missed it.
The dates are worth separating. Art Basel’s announced public days are Dec. 4-6 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, with invitation-only previews Dec. 2-3. ICA Miami’s exhibition has been open since April 30. It belongs to the city’s longer museum season, rather than the burst of programming surrounding the fair.
That distinction is more than a scheduling inconvenience. A concentrated exhibition can give an artist room to become complicated, with several stages of work available for comparison. Yektai makes a particularly interesting case.
A museum first, after a long career
ICA Miami describes the presentation as Yektai’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States. Curated by Donna Honarpisheh, it brings together about 30 paintings made between 1948 and 1963.
The late arrival of that museum milestone should not be confused with a previously invisible career. Nazanine Nouri’s reporting for Kayhan Life traces Yektai’s exhibitions in the 1950s and 1960s and the renewed presentations organized after his death in 2019. These include shows at Karma in New York in 2021 and 2024 and Los Angeles in 2025.
A first solo museum exhibition is one form of recognition within that longer history. Its particular value lies in the chance to put multiple works into a sustained argument. An artist’s name can circulate for years while substantial parts of the practice remain unfamiliar to a viewer. Gathering paintings makes it possible to encounter relationships that a single reproduced image cannot establish.
